President Obama, No One in Arizona is Laughing
Az's Guv's response. I gotta feeling she's got a point.
There are--despite a huge increase in the number of agents, the (partial) great wall, and other resources applied over the last decade...--60% *fewer* detainments by the Border Patrol than a decade ago. More agents, more resources, technology, and many fewer people detained. That suggests (strongly) that many fewer are crossing. In all likelihood, the number crossing has declined more than 60% (all the added resources has to mean that they're doing a better job of catching those seeking to cross...).
Other problems? Crime? Crime is--per official sources--down. Down over the decade, down, in fact, to the lowest level in 40 years in AZ. But to listen to the law's supporters, one would think that it's never been worse.
Nah. Just hype, hysteria and media and politics--and nativism.
The murder that's been waved (bloody shirt...) in the press is a rarity; AZ police sources indicate it's the only murder in about a decade that has been associated with immigration... and I've seen stories suggesting that *that* is possibly in error, that the police are looking at it not being an immigrant at all.
Is there a border problem, an immigration problem? Sure.
Is this law helping control it?
No. It's not doing anything for some comprehensive reform of immigration laws, either.
But it is doing a superb job of cutting the GOP's throat for the next few decades.
I don't know Ogre, my nieces drive to visit their Grandpa in Mexico with a carload of stuff and their problems with cops start south of the border, paying off the Mex Cops until they don't have much for the grandparents by the time they get there...
