Health and Morality

Unitarian Universalist like to chat about Healthy this and Healthy that and often in the context where others would talk morality.

So is an ethical transgression immoral or unhealthy? Can it be both? How do I tell which?

Just wondering....

Bill - the adult and young adult age level Our Whole Lives (OWL) sexuality education programs do talk about other sexual values beyond health concerns. This isl true when they are taught as a secular program and also true when combined with the Unitarian Universalist Sexuality and Our Faith program.

From your blog posts in the past, I've gather that your exposure to the OWL curriculum is minimal (parent orientation session for adolescent OWL program?).

It would be easy to talk in generalizations and says "Unitarian Universalist like to chat about Healthy this and Healthy that and often in the context where others would talk morality."

However, if you want to have a deeper conversation, let your congregation's religious education staff know that you want an adult OWL class in your congregation so you can have this conversation. The adult OWL program (blended with updated portions of the newer young adult OWL program) would give you what you're asking for.

Regarding your "immoral or unhealthy," I will let you think about that on your own. I will suggest that you think of this as a Venn diagram with overlap and not as two discrete categories.

Ok, when President Clinton had sex with that women, did he do something unhealthy or immoral? If it was unhealthy, how, certainly not physically... then spiritually?

Bill you do not know with certainty that Slick Willie's escapades with Monica Lewinsky, to say nothing of other "conquests" was not physically unhealthy. Who knows what STDs he or she might have *transmitted* via unprotected sex. Was the famous cigar wrapped in a condom? If not the nicotine absorption *could* be "less than healthy"...

Notwithstanding that, unless William Jefferson Clinton & Hillary Rodham had an "open marriage" or similar "arrangement", Bill Clinton's "external affairs" were probably "less than healthy" for Hillary's mental well-being.

No?
